About a month ago, I created a “free gallon of gas @ exxon” event on facebook. The tagline for the event was “EXXONerated” which I thought was hilarious. I invited everyone I knew more or less and for the first two weeks the group membership stopped at 200 people or something small like that. The date for the event was June 1st 2008. I had forgotten about the event, but long story short. By the end of it, there were 2500 people that joined the event. Another 1000 were “maybe attending” and people had heated debates about gas, exxon and tons of other things.
People eventually found out it was fake and posted their experiences at the exxon pumps.
”am i the only asshole who actually went to an exxon today and asked for my free gallon. wtf.”
”i just came from exon and the guy had no fucking clue what i was talking about let alone understand me.
he kept saying ‘gallon 4.00’ im like ‘no. gallon free’.
i think its pure bullshit.”
Others sent me hate mail:
“fuck you douchebag for makin that stupid group.
go suck a dick.”
While others applauded me
“I didn’t go, but if this was actually a facebook scam the person is ingenious. Had people arguing about gas prices for days and fooled a good number of people. Heh.”
All in all, great success.
